Family Fund is the UK’s largest charity providing grants for families raising disabled or seriously ill children and young people. Last year, they provided 89,423 grants or services worth over £36 million to families across the UK.
Our family has been lucky enough to receive not one but two grants from this amazing charity as we have a young son who has special needs. River has many difficulties, with as yet, no diagnosis, but these include Peg feeding, growth problems and a recent partial diagnosis to cover his other difficulties, of global developmental delay. River is now 29 months old and continues to need specialist help in many areas of his life.
Our first grant was awarded just after River was discharged from an extended stay in Bristol Children’s hospital when he was around nine months old and this was for a weekend away. We used this to take our three boys (Alfie (now 8) and Harry (now 5) plus River) away to a theme park for a few days. This was much needed for us all, and gave us time to reconnect as a family as I had been living away up in Bristol with River for months. But also time to have some fun and create some happy memories in a year that had been filled with so many difficulties for all of us.
The second was awarded last December. This time we asked for some sensory toys for River as this was recommended by health professionals and other parents who had children with similar challenges. We were absolutely over whelmed by this award and were able to get some amazing lights and other sensory toys that have made such a difference for River. We bought lights for his cot so he can watch them as he slowly dozes off and various other items to fill his tepee – which is River’s private space – no other kids allowed!
Family Fund is such an amazing charity as it gives grants for not only days out or toys but for essential household items so if your washing machine went they would provide you with a new one, this has made such a difference to thousands of families in the U.K.
I’m lucky enough to be able to work as well as care for River but there are other families that don’t have that luxury and finding money for things can put a huge strain on their lives that they really don’t need.
I want to thank Family Fund for allowing so many families like mine to be able to get grants that really do support and make a difference to not only our children who have difficulties but to our families.
