This week we had a meeting at the nursery where River will be going in September. As River has been diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay he has a portage worker who comes once a week to help with his development but now he is turning two they want to transition him into a nursery to help continue this support.
So myself, his portage worker and the nursery had a meeting to discuss River and his needs. He will be going for two mornings a week to start with but will have some settling sessions first. We discussed Rivers strengths and his weaknesses and how they will help him. They were lovely and very helpful and are going to do a lot to help River to feel safe and happy. They are even getting a little tent for River to go in if it all gets too much – River is not a massive fan of other children or loud noises!
I have decided to start with the mornings as River has a massive issue with food and I don’t want him to have to deal with that on top of everything else he is going to struggle with. I also had to explain that for other children being sick is not normal however for River it is – it does not mean he is poorly – it’s just something River does due to his gastro issues. In other words…please don’t be calling me to collect him as it will happen! So for now just two mornings will suffice.
I think this is going to be great for River and I feel he needs this. He now needs to be pushed and if he sees other children doing things River may want to start to do those things too.
This is going to be a big step for River and a big challenge for the little guy however I have faith he will thrive, and for me I’m going to miss the little one however two mornings a week with no children – I don’t mind if I do!
Wish him luck!!
